Leisure Golf Club boasts the only golf course on the south coast and is open to the public. It was commissioned by Dr. William Meister in the late 1980’s and involved the purchase of a 100 acre farm in the Shimba Hills to provide enough topsoil to cover the ubiquitous local coral. The first 9 holes opened in 1991 whilst the finished product was officially opened in July 1993 by the then Minister of Tourism, Mr. Katana Ngala.
The 18-hole championship course, home to the Diani Beach Masters, is recognised as one of the most exciting golf courses in East Africa. Fully irrigated fairways run through Palm, Cashew nut and Casuarina Pine trees. The par 72, 6084-meter course has 85 bunkers and a large lake, which guarantees a challenging and exciting game of golf. The course also plays host to abundant bird-life and several species of monkey.
The green fees are reasonable and non members may play in most of the tournaments. If you have left your clubs at home, the Pro shop has ladies' and men's sets of clubs for hire. To play the course men must have a handicap of at least 28 and ladies 36, or a playing certificate from a recognised club. Beginners are welcome on the driving range at any time. Visitors should always follow the dress code (collared shirts with trousers or shorts/skirts of reasonable length).
The full size driving range has a chipping green and bunker for practice. Golf professionals have a well stocked Pro Shop and the Club House has all facilities including changing rooms and a bar/restaurant.
